Journal Therapy Being Used To Help Treat Emotional And Physical Issues

By Della Monroe

Writing your own inner thoughts and feelings has been used for a long time as partial treatment for numerous problems. Some of these conditions include those pertaining to emotional and physical aspects of the person. When used for the purpose of treating conditions, it is often called journal therapy. Psychologists use it with their patients along with other techniques but people can utilize it for this purpose by themselves. It is a way to clarify one's thoughts, feelings, and more.

Each person has to deal with different things in their life. These occurrences vary between individuals but they all need to be dealt with in some way, especially when what has happened is quite negative. There might be many methods of dealing with such things, lessening the impact on life, and to even make them into something positive.

When seeing a professional therapist, there may be more than one method used to help the patient deal with circumstances. One technique that is often employed along with others is writing in a journal. This includes the patient expressing their feelings and thoughts through writing. It may include the events of the day, how they felt about them, or otherwise. There is no restriction on what a person can write. While this method may be used with the professional in one-to-one treatment, it can also be employed with group sessions and with something called self-therapy.

Having this activity as a form of treating various conditions is a way to clarify what the person is dealing with or how they are felling. They can take the events apart in their mind as they write and reconstruct them to help them make more sense. In a way, this can help the patient to understand their emotions.

Various situations may be assisted by using this activity. Depression and anxiety as well as PTSD are three common conditions. However, physical illnesses, relationship problems and other such things can also be dealt with in this way.

There is generally no set way of utilizing this method. A person is free to write what they want. They describe their inner thoughts and emotions. It is simply using self expression as a way of healing oneself without the concern of being judged.

This being said, this method of treatment is not only for writing negative thoughts. It may include positive thoughts and happy feelings. In fact, describing improvements in life can be a way of feeling even better about it. Uplifting thoughts and emotions are emphasized when they are written. This can make a large impact in the healing process.

Whether dealing with physical illness, relationship problems, psychological disturbances, or otherwise, writing can be an excellent therapeutic exercise. There are no restrictions on what a person can write and in what form. Patients are encouraged to write about their thoughts, feelings and more. While many people describe their negative thoughts, it is encouraged to include positive aspects as well. This can speed up the healing process immensely.
