Alcohol Abuse and How to Finally Stop It

Many alcoholics know WHY they must quit the bad habit. What they truly don't know is HOW to do it. Its possible that you have lost a lot of jobs and have legal problems. Its either you were dumped by your partner or abandoned by family members because of how you have been acting. All reasons why you need to look at your drinking and seriously consider quitting.



Alcoholics usually know that they have to give up the bad habit. Most 'normal' individuals do not just wake up and say, "I think I should quit drinking." Many individuals who drink heavily know deep down inside that they have a problem.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were a Magic Pill which made you give up drinking? Or maybe a hypnotist to 'reprogram' your craving for alcohol. Wouldn't a time machine be nice, go back in time before you had a problem and refrain from that very first drink?

The fact of the matter is there is no fast and easy way. First, you need to learn how to live your life without alcohol. Some people will crave for alcohol and this could be a long and painful phase. If you want to succeed then you could use some tools and strategies. Heavy drinkers need help through withdrawal and detox. So before quitting, ask for a physician's advice. Others will only experience minimal physical discomfort. A lot of alcoholics have tried to quit once or twice in their lives. It could take years before one could get rid of the physical cravings. You will not succeed if you don't learn to live a life without alcohol. For every one thousand alcoholics, only one stays sober for at least 2 years. The odds are dismal but there is a way to be that 1.

Yes, most people will fail if they do not give up drinking in a considered, disciplined way.

First, you have to convince yourself that you must quit drinking.

If you really would like to give up drinking alcohol then you have to jot down each and every possible reason why you. Write down each and every reason you can think of. Be sure and include anyone you hurt, how humiliated you are, and any damage you have caused. Put this paper in a safe place so that you could read it if you need to expel any doubt that your should give up drinking alcohol.

If you need more convincing then think of the money you could save if you stop going to pubs and purchasing alcohol. With the legal fees, you could bring home your entire income. Check your credit card statements and your budget; do not just invent numbers. Try to figure out how much alcohol is costing you not just mentally, physically, relationally but financially.

This kind of truthful introspection is something you would have to get used to in order to come to terms with your life and recover completely. You will know when you're prepared and committed to stop drinking liquor.

Get to a Doctor

Your doctor will evaluate the damage you've done to your body. Advice on how to quit drinking alcohol is something a physician can give as well. You may need hospitalization and medical supervision, or you may be able to go it by yourself.

Telling People You Trust Could be Helpful

Another effective method to quit drinking is to tell trusted people who would understand that you are going to stop drinking and you might need their help. If they really care about you then they would support you.

Find Meetings

12 Step Meetings is a great place to meet others who have experienced the same thing you're going through. Start by searching for 12 Step Meetings near your neighborhood. Various types of individuals with various types of problems attend various kinds of meetings. Try to go to as many meetings within your neighborhood or better yet, try to go to ninety meetings within 90 days. You will find out much more about quitting in these meetings than anywhere else.
