DIY Handmade Christmas Wreaths For Decoration

By Katina Brady

You may be wondering how you can decorate your home in new and interesting ways during the holidays, aside from putting up a tree. Handmade Christmas wreaths are a great way to celebrate the season and you can make them yourself with a little bit of time and patience. You can create something truly one-of-a-kind to greet visitors warmly when they arrive on your doorstep. Here are some ideas.

Red, green, white and gold are colours often associated with this part of the year. The vibrant red of poinsettia flowers as they bloom adds a brilliant pop of colour to the greenery of the trees, holly and mistletoe, as well as the snow of winter. Gold is often seen as well because of the grandeur of the season, and it is a colour associated with royalty.

It is not mandatory to follow any particular colour scheme during the holidays, though traditional colours have been mentioned. This is because in recent times, people have begun experimenting with decor and themes to suit their personal tastes. Also, there are some places that do Christmas a little differently, considering that certain locations may not experience snowfall, like the tropics, for example.

Making a Christmas wreath is very easy with the right supplies. The most crucial part of a project like this is the foundation. This could be a doughnut shape cut out of cardboard, wood or foam. Wreath bases are easily found at art and craft store to save time and effort in making one. There are many different ways to begin the project, so it's a good idea to decide on what is the desired outcome in order to know how to begin.

You can get a grapevine wreath base in the craft store if you are thinking about making some sort of floral piece. Use plants like juniper or eucalyptus, or other seasonal things from nature like pine cones to keep in line with the theme. You can glue suitable decorations that may be larger in order to fill up any empty spaces in the leaves.

Old Christmas decorations can be recycled into something new by using them to cover a wreath base completely. The more shapes, sizes and colours, the better, as this will be a fun addition to the home or front door. Use baubles of all kinds to build up the size of the wreath and glue them on one by one. A wired ribbon woven through the bauble loops will add more volume.

You can also use fabric or paper for decorating a wreath base. Cut a bunch of fabric strips and gather them up to create ruffles that you can then stick down to the base. Burlap is good for a rustic effect as it is thick and heavy and will add much volume. You can add some colour by placing a red bow at the top of the wreath.

Paper with text or music on it is great for a monochrome decor. Strips of paper can be turned into loops or bows to completely cover the foundation. Add pops of colour with mistletoe and holly. Use a red ribbon to hang the piece.
